With many households acquiring pets during the pandemic, remote and hybrid working have been lifelines for many pet parents. However, many companies such as Boots and JD Sports have announced a full time return to office work for all employees. 

In light of this, searches for 'dog friendly offices' have skyrocketed by 50% in the last three months as Brits look for a working environment that allows them to bring their furry friend to work with them. 

A new study by the small business experts at Bionic has looked into the true cost of working from home vs five days in the office for pet owners.

Breakdown of the costs

  • According to ManyPets, it costs on average £25 for your dog to spend a day at doggy daycare. 

  • The study found that, on average, commuting to the office costs £19.10 per day in the UK, so when working from home Brits can save £9.69 per day.
  • With this in mind, dog owners could be spending £11,113.20 annually if commuting to the office five days a week, compared to just £2,371.32 if working remotely.

  • With approximately 252 working days a year for full-time employees (after deducting public holidays), switching from full-time working in the office to full-time remote working could save dog owners up to £8,742 annually.

  • The average day of working from home costs £9.41 a day, amounting to £47.07 per week. 

  • Running a home office can cost approximately £41.28 per week in energy bills, due to running a desktop computer, WiFi and even boiling a kettle and washing dishes.  

  • Working from home can add £3.88 a week to your water bills.
