The RSPCA is calling on animal lovers to take on a challenge this spring - to tackle 50 miles, in any way they like - to fundraise for animals in urgent need.

The charity’s popular fundraising challenge ‘50 Miles In March’ returns this month for its fourth year - giving participants the freedom to take on the active-adventure in any way they like - allowing animal lovers an opportunity once again to raise vital funds for the RSPCA.

Whether on foot, in water, on wheels or on horseback, to name just a few - the challenge allows people to be as creative as they can to raise money for the RSPCA, and it can be done in one go - or in parts throughout the whole month of March.

Abi Mustard, from the RSPCA’s events team, said: “Animal lovers everywhere are invited to join us again for the 50 Miles in March fundraising challenge. Whatever your sport or fitness level, you can take part.

“Whatever your age, wherever you live, and however you prefer to get active - this challenge is for you! It’s completely free to take part and we have everything you need on our website to track your miles, record your donation pledges and let your family and friends know how they can support you.”

Participants are invited to raise whatever they can through the challenge, and any funds - no matter how small - can go a long way to helping the animal welfare charity rescue, rehabilitate and rehome animals in desperate need of care.

The RSPCA needs vital funds as its officers continue to face challenges on the frontline, as abandonment reports being made to the charity have sadly reached a six-year high.

Abi added: “The RSPCA relies completely on generous donations from animal lovers to fund our work rescuing animals and investigating cruelty in England and Wales. We are so lucky to have amazing animal champions who help us by raising funds. Previously we’ve seen people smash the challenge in all sorts of ways - from simply adding another mile to their daily dog walk to more unusual means such as rollerskating, skiing, horseriding, and more.”

Participants (before 1 March) can sign up for the challenge to receive a free t-shirt & welcome pack on the RSPCA’sWebsite. Participants that raise more than £35 will receive an RSPCA beanie. Participants are encouraged to join the official facebook group, use the hashtag #TeamAnimal and tag the RSPCA to connect with other fundraisers.

One RSPCA Rescuer is already limbering up to take on the challenge after signing up as a team. The charity’s Surrey Inspectorate Group, including Animal Rescue Officer Meg Lloyd (pictured) will be clocking up the miles by walking.

Meg said: “I’m so proud to be taking on the 50 Miles for Animals challenge with my colleagues. We see firsthand every day just how many animals need our help and the impact that donations have on the charity’s work rescuing animals, so we wanted to get involved ourselves and inspire everyone to sign up too.

Meg joined the RSPCA as a frontline rescuer in September 2025 after being medically retired from the army, following a career-ending hip injury.

Three surgeries and a paralysed right leg has left Meg unable to run or climb, but this hasn’t dampened her spark to keep active in other ways.

She added: “I may never be able to run or climb mountains again, but I can walk, and I am so grateful for that. Animals are incredibly important to me and they need our help, so I’ll be clocking up as many miles as I possibly can along with my colleagues to raise as much as possible to help the RSPCA continue its essential work.”
