Bought By Many has analysed data from over 523,800 pet-owning households, we have been able to pinpoint which locations in the UK have the most dogs and cats, as well as, each location's human to pet ratio. 

Our study revealed Glasgow has the highest number of dog owners per capita, suggesting Glasgow is the UK's most dog-friendly city and London is the UK's most cat-friendly city, with the highest number of cat owners per capita. 

Key Findings: 

  • Glasgow has the highest amount of dog owners per capita with an average of 31.3 dog owners per 1,000 households (9,927 in total), with Bristol in second place with an estimated 22.9 dog owners per 1,000 households (4,195 dog owners). 
  • Lancashire's Rossendale ranked as the location with the least dog owners per capita (10 dog owners in total or 0.36 per 1,000 households). 
  • For cats, London reigned as having the highest cat population with 82.7 cat owners per 1,000 households (267k in total) and Edinburgh came in second with 19.1 per 1,000 households (4,862 in total). 
  • The least popular location for cat owners is Conwy which has only 9 cat owners in total (0.17 cat owners per 1,000 households).

 

Where in the UK has the highest and lowest dog population?

Our analysis of Glasgow ranked as the UK location with the highest dog population with 9,927 dog owners in the city (31.3 per 1,000 households) - suggesting Glasgow is the UK's most dog-friendly city.

According to our study, London is the UK location with the highest cat population with an estimated 82.7 cat owners per 1,000 households (267,481 in total). Edinburgh ranked in second place with 19.1 cat owners per 1,000 households (4,862).
