TV Vet urges Collie-lovers in the South West to consider rescue dogs
A TV vet is urging dog lovers in the South West of England to take a look at the RSPCA websiteas new research shows the region loves a Border collie and the charity has lots waiting for homes.
The RSPCA had record breaking numbers of dogs in their care during the busy summer* - with most being looked after in private kennels as RSPCA rehoming centres are full.
But there's good news. Data from RSPCA Pet Insurance** shows dog lovers in the South West of England are bucking the trend by opening their homes to Border Collies and crosses, more than any other region in the UK - with more than 700 policy holders owning this breed.
TV vet and RSPCA Ambassador, Rory Cowlam, who shares his home with rescue lurcher Nala, said: "There are too many dogs and not enough homes, so I will always adopt and I'd encourage anyone thinking of getting a dog to check out a rescue first.
"Not only is it hugely rewarding but you are changing the life of a dog in need."
The RSPCA is urging people to consider adopting larger dogs this Adoptober as the charity is struggling with record numbers of dogs in its care.
New data from the charity reveals that it can take up to seven times longer for some larger dog breeds to find a new home compared to smaller dogs.
RSPCA Operations Manager Glenn Mayoll said: "RSPCA centres are full and we have hundreds of animals waiting to get in so they can start their journey to finding a loving forever home.
"We love dogs of all shapes and sizes but it's a sad fact that larger dogs like Border collies can wait up to seven times longer to find their forever home.
"All of our dogs have been rescued from heartbreaking circumstances - or even born in our care after their mums were rescued - and we desperately need people with the time, patience and love to give them the happy-ever-after life they deserve.
"We know people in the South West of England are partial to a Collie, so we are calling on them to take a look at our lovely dogs who are looking for homes, and if they aren't able to adopt from us, to please share with their family and friends. Who knows ... their perfect home could be just round the corner."
Collies take 48 days on average to find a loving home compared to the average of 41 days and the RSPCA currently has eight looking for homes
Andrew Lyons from RSPCA Pet Insurance said: "Some people may think twice about having a bigger dog due to concerns about cost.
"Things like food and preventative health measures such as flea treatments and wormers generally cost more for bigger dogs, so it's important to think carefully. We - and the RSPCA - provide a handy calculator which can help estimate some of the cost.
"But when it comes to other veterinary costs our claims show that larger dogs don't always have larger bills.
"Regardless, one of the ways to protect yourself from large unexpected bills is to get pet insurance.
