As the new school year begins, it's not just students who benefit from a fresh start, animals in need do too. Fostering offers pets a chance to learn, grow, and thrive in a safe, supportive environment, much like children settling into a new classroom. Blue Cross Devon is appealing to animal lovers to become foster carers, offering temporary homes and comfort to homeless pets

Foster care offers a supportive home environment where pets can learn to interact and develop positive behaviours. Consistent human contact helps animals become more confident, friendly, and ready to thrive in their forever home.

Annaliese Langworthy, Centre Manager at Blue Cross in Devon said: "For many animals, having the chance to spend time in a home environment is important. It helps them build confidence, adjust to everyday life, and learn positive behaviours that prepare them for their forever home. As animal homelessness increases, we're calling on our community to help by becoming foster carers. Fostering could be a great option for someone who wants animal companionship but isn't able to commit to a pet full-time due to work or other commitments."

Foster volunteers will be provided with all equipment they need, and costs for food and any veterinary treatment will be covered by Blue Cross. Volunteers need to have experience of handling and caring for pets, live within 1 hour of the centre and have use of suitable transport. If fostering cats or kittens a spare room will be needed for them, and a garden is beneficial if fostering dogs. They will preferably have no other pets.
